This web page contains reference materials for my Wyzant students. Everyone is welcome to freely use it too.

My Background

My name is Harold, and I have tutored 500+ students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) over the past 30+ years. I have logged over 3,000 tutoring hours through Wyzant and have a 5-Star rating.I worked in the BYU Math Lab to pay my way through college where I earned my MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a minor in mathematics and aerospace studies. I am currently attending an online college working towards my Ph.D. in Mathematics.

I tutor all levels of math to both high school and undergraduate college students. This includes all of the subjects in the table below.

I love teaching students who want to learn and have set a goal but are either behind or are not connecting with their teachers. Math can be easy and fun when you understand the key concepts and basic building blocks. My Socratic teaching style is to ask my students focused questions that cause them to think and then determine the correct answers for themselves. I then like to show multiple ways to solve the same problem and how to verify the answer as being correct. This is the difference between a 'B' student and an 'A' student. I also believe in teaching how the covered math concepts apply to our everyday lives.

In addition to STEM, I also tutor C/C++, Java, Python, Chess, Cybersecurity, and the Microsoft Office Suite. Back in 1986, I published a book and software package used by several universities on numerical analysis using the C programming language.

I am set up for remote tutoring using the Wyzant Online Tutoring Tool and Zoom. I work with Wyzant as a part-time independent contractor to find new students to teach.

Rates and Terms of Service

Billing:
- I charge $80/hour.
- If you are not completely satisfied with any lesson, for any reason, then there is no charge.
- If you are locked in at a lower hourly rate, then I will honor that lower rate.
- My hourly rate may increase by $5/year at the start of each school year.
- In the event of a rate increase, you will receive a rate increase notification at least 1 month in advance.
- I bill in 5-minute increments.
- Lessons must be a minimum of 15 minutes long.
- I do not charge for missed appointments or late fees, ever.
- For group tutoring the second student is not charged, however, the third student increases the hourly rate by 50%.
Late Fees:
- I do not charge for missed lessons or late fees, ever. I only charge when I add value.
- If you miss two lessons in a row I may give your weekly time slot to another student.
Wyzant:

If I found you through Wyzant then I must bill you through Wyzant. No exceptions.
Wyzant takes a fee for their services, which is included in my fee.

Referrals:

If you were not referred to me through Wyzant then payments will be through Venmo, Zelle, or similar.
The person who referred you gets either $20 or a free half-hour lesson.

I tutor my local students in my home office in McKinney, TX.

Tues: 10:30 AM - 11:00 PM CST
Wed: 9:00 AM - 11:00 PM CST, except 1:00 - 3:00 PM and 7:30 - 8:30 PM.
Thurs: 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM CST
Fri: 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM CST
Sat: 9:00 AM - 11:00 PM CST

I Provide:

Post-lesson feedback
Travel expenses to and from your home if within 5 miles.

For Home Office Lessons I Also Provide:

Graph/Notebook paper
Color copies and printouts
Bottled water
Snacks
ADHD devices (fidget spinners, etc.)

You Provide:

Agenda of what needs to be covered during a lesson.
After you take a test on material that I have tutored you on, please tell me the grade or score you received, good or bad.
The mobile phone numbers for both the parent(s) and student for text messaging.
