This web page contains reference materials for my Wyzant students. Everyone is welcome to freely use and modify it too.

My Background

My name is Harold, and I have tutored 500+ students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) over the past 30+ years. I have logged over 3,200 tutoring hours through Wyzant and have a 5-Star rating. I worked in the BYU Math Lab to pay my way through college where I earned my BS in Electrical Engineering and MS in Computer Engineering. I later earned a BA in Mathematics from SNHU. I am currently working towards my Ph.D. in Mathematics at Texas A&M.

I tutor all levels of math, from basic math, to high school, and undergraduate college students. This includes all of the subjects in the table below.

I love teaching students who want to learn and have set a goal but are either behind or are not connecting with their teachers. Math can be easy and fun when you understand the key concepts and basic building blocks. My Socratic teaching style is to ask my students focused questions that cause them to think and then determine the correct answers for themselves. I then like to show multiple ways to solve the same problem and how to verify the answer as being correct. This is the difference between a 'B' student and an 'A' student. I also believe in teaching how the covered math concepts apply to our everyday lives.

In addition to STEM, I also tutor Cybersecurity, AI Chatbots,C, C++, Java, Python, Chess, and the Microsoft Office Suite (O365). Back in college, I published a book and software package used by several universities on numerical analysis using the C programming language.

I am set up for remote tutoring using the Wyzant Online Tutoring Tool and Zoom. I work with Wyzant as a part-time independent contractor to find new students to teach.

Rates and Terms of Service

Billing:
- My student rate is $80/hour (1 student).
- My small group rate is $90/hour (2 - 5 students).
- My classroom rate is $100/hour (6 or more participants).
- My hourly rate may increase by $5/year at the start of each school year.
- In the event of a rate increase, you will receive a rate increase notification at least 1 month in advance.
- If you are locked in at a lower hourly rate, then I will honor that lower rate for at least 1 year.
- I bill in 5-minute increments.
- Lessons must be a minimum of 15 minutes long.
- If you are not completely satisfied with any lesson, for any reason, then there is no charge.
Late fees:
- I do not charge for missed lessons or late fees, ever. I only charge when I add value.
- If you miss two lessons in a row I may give your weekly time slot to another student without your consent.
Wyzant:

If I found you through Wyzant then I must bill you through Wyzant. No exceptions.
Wyzant takes a fee for their services, which is included in my fee.
After each lesson, I enter the start time, finish time, and some lesson feedback.
Wyzant then automatically bills your credit card per my hourly rate.

Referrals:

If you were not referred to me through Wyzant then payments will be through Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, or similar.
The person who referred you gets either $20 or a free half-hour lesson.

I tutor my local students in my home office in McKinney, TX.

I provide:

One-on-one tutoring
Study aid handouts (cheat sheets)
Post-lesson feedback
Travel expenses to and from your home if within 5 miles.

For home office lessons I also provide:

Graph/Notebook paper
Color copies and printouts
Bottled water
Snacks
ADHD devices (fidget spinners, etc.)
My stapled hand-written notes as I work the problems with you.

For remote lessons I also provide:
- A ZIP file with all whiteboards
- A link to an MP4 recording of the lesson
You provide:

Agenda of what you need to be covered during a lesson. Typically topic overview, homework problems, exam prep, and post-test review.
After you take a test on material that I have tutored you on, please tell me the grade or score you received, good or bad.
The mobile phone numbers for both the parent(s) and student for text messaging.
