Subject: Upgrade

I need everyone's help on an upgrade here... I think it is worth our time and effort to upgrade the firmware on all our radios. If you have a Workgroup Bridge, I have already done it for you. (One of the bennies of having a bridge.) I have also upgraded the firmware on all of the access points on my side. All that is left are the PCI Client Cards. There are 20 of them out there. If you have a PCI Client Card in your computer, would you please run through the following steps? The one thing that can go wrong during this proccess is if the power goes out... if that happens during the upgrade... well, your card with be inoperative. Otherwise, it is pretty easy.

1. Save the attached file (PC350v42510.img) to your hard drive. Remember where you put it.

2. Open the Aironet Client Utility (ACU).

3. Click on Commands.

4. Click on Load New Firmware.

5. Find the location of the new firmware in the Open Window.

6. Click the new firmware image (PC350v42510.img) so it appears in the File name box at the bottom of the window.

7. Click Open to load the firmware image into your client adapter's Flach memory. Please send me an email and let me know when you have finished this. If you don't want to do it yourself, just send me an email, and I will come over and do it.

To confirm:
Open Aironet Client Utilities (ACU)
Click on Commands
Click on Status
You should see a line that says: Firmware 4.25.10

Thanks,

Butch

Subject: Re: Up and down

I could give you the long story, but that would take too long...

The short story is this: Qwest screwed up the wiring yesterday, and that took us down (it also affected the T-1 lines to the schools.) They had that fixed by noon yesterday, and that is why we came back up. When they tested it to make sure it was ok, they found other errors in the line, that were most likely there since they installed it. That took longer to fix, and was also a wiring mistake on Qwest's part. (I just love working with Qwest...)

I am told it is ok now. I am sorry for the hassle...

Well, we are up and down since yesterday. What is the prognosis? Still can't depend on it being there.

Subject: T-1 Outage

I know the T-1 is working right now, but Sprint needs to do some more trouble shooting... so the T-1 will be going down again at 11:30am. It will be down for about an hour. Sorry about the hassle.

Subject: T-1

The T-1 is here. It is up and running and fully tested. (Theoretical max downloads are 190KB/s... I have seen 180KB/s.) Right now I am running the old network, and the new network together. That means that all you need to do is change your network settings to switch to the T-1.

I would like to deliver those settings to you in person because I want to make sure there are no misunderstandings. If you don't call me, I will be calling you.

Yeah, me too.

I have been on the phone all day today with Qwest and Sprint. First Sprint said Qwest had not released the line. Then Qwest they had released the line. Then Sprint said they have to test it. I still dont know if they have done that yet. Then Sprint said that if it passes its test, it will be Wednesday before their "busy" technicians can get out here to hook up the router.... I finally told them that if they wanted to keep this account, they would be here long before Wednesday. Now you know what I know.

Butch

P.S. I dont think terrorists will be our demise. It will be the bureaucrats that work at the telephone company.

Qwest called today. They said they would be here sometime before the end of tomorrow. They wouldn't give me a set time. After talking to them, it sounds like it could take a couple of days to get it finished. They have to install it. Then someone from Qwest has to check it. Then Sprint has to activate it. In any case, it will be started tomorrow and finished this week.

Subject: Good News

I have to get this out before my ISP goes down again. Quest was actually at my house today! They said that the lines are all good to my house, and the network guys just need to come to my home and set me up! Give it a week, and we might be in business.

I know this will come back to haunt me, but I'm going to say it anyway. I think I can say... after the changes I made today, your connection to my house is robust. If anyone has reason to disagree with that statement, let me know, and we will fix it.

Thanks,
Butch

I am going to be working on the system this morning. It wont be down long.... maybe an hour. When it comes back up, you should all see a better more stable connection. Especially those connected to the Relay. If this does what it should, I will be finished making the network robust and it will be ready for the T-1.

Subject: Broadband Update

Let me start by apologizing to those who were supposed to get set up last week. When this War began, I was on a trip and got stuck in Arizona for almost a week. I'm sorry, but it was completely out of my control. I will contact you and try to set something up as soon as I can, but be aware, I am a week behind now.

Second, let me apologize ahead of time for being curt. Four of my co-workers had their throats cut, and the passengers they were responsible for, were murdered. I am very... very... angry about it.

Here is the thing.... I want to make sure that before I install new customers, you fully understand what you are getting yourself into. Please let me clear this up:

I am NOT presently selling a service. I do NOT have a T-1 yet. Therefore, I do NOT have any bandwidth to sell you. That is why I am NOT sending a bill in the mail every month.

Right now I am simply sharing my personal internet connection with you. Why would I do that? Two reasons:

First: I thought that people would rather have SOME internet connection, rather than NONE. Even if it's not such a great connection.

Second: It would give me a chance to build and test my network, so that I could work the kinks out of it, and it would be robust before the T-1 got here.

This means that you have to put up with the same poor service that I have to put up with. Yes, my ISP is BAD. They go down on a regular basis. I call them every time they go down and complain about it. Unfortunately, that is about all I can do. I can't switch ISP's because they are the only ISP in town... (Actually... it's even worse than that. After they set up my house, they said they wouldn't set up anyone else in Cedar Hills, because it cost them too much money. So, really, they are not even technically here.) I have to put up with them, because I have no choice. That is WHY I am getting a T-1. I know I can do it better than they can.

The bottom line is: You will not have a reliable, consistant, internet connection until the T-1 gets here. When the T-1 get's installed, and you start getting a bill in the mail, that is when you can expect the connection to be consistent and reliable. (Qwest is still telling me 26 Sep 01. Let's hope they are telling the truth.) I will continue to install new customers who still want the service. If you can't handle periodic internet outages, I suggest that you wait until the T-1 gets here, OR have a "dial up" backup.

I am terribly sorry if you were misinformed about what I am doing. I hope that this clears up any misunderstanding. Again, I apologize for lacking tact, but I hope you understand where that is coming from.

Butch

P.S. For those of you who would like to know why the connection was down all weekend: My ISP said that they were getting rid of all the hardware that did not belong to them. They had contracted someone outside their company to build and maintain part of their network, but the relationship turned sour. So they were getting rid of the other company's hardware and putting their own hardware in it's place. That took them pretty much the entire weekend to do.

Subject: Connection Problems

As some of you have noticed, there are some problems with the radio connection. I think I know what they are and how to fix them. It's going to take a little time and the system will go down every now and then. It shouldn't go down for more than an hour at a time, and I should have all the kinks worked out in within a week. Sorry.

The good news:

The relay is up and running. If you live in Cedar Hills, I can now get a signal to you. If you live more than a mile away (line of sight,) then we will have to use a bigger antenna than the standard, but I can still get a signal to you. Remember, there is always the exception, but I think I can get to all of you.

The bad news:

I have a limited number of days that I can do installs. Listed below are the days I have available. If you don't already have an appointment for me to come to your home and set you up, please email me with the day and time you want me to come. (Mornings are best for me.) I will email you back to confirm the day and time.

Friday 31, Aug
Saturday 1, Sep
Tuesday 4, Sep
Wednesday 5, Sep
Thursday 13, Sep
Friday 14, Sep
Saturday, 15 Sep
Monday, 17 Sep
Tuesday, 18 Sep

I have not heard anything new from Sprint or Qwest. They are still saying 26 Sep. If anything changes, I will let you know.

Also, Harold Toomey has Norton's Security Package 2001 Family Edition available to anyone on this mailing list at a wholesale price. It has Parental Controls, Antivirus, and a personal Firewall. His email address is: htoomey@symantec.com

Subject: Update

Not much to update, really. I have continued to bug Sprint, but they have not given me any useful information.

I have installed everyone who has requested an install. I am now working on the people who are just out of range, or who need a relay. If you want me to set you up, send an email, or call me:

801-879-3376

Leave a message, and I will get right back to you. I am sorry this is taking so long. I feel like I have done everything I can to speed it up.... so if anyone knows how to light a fire under Qwest....

I'm all ears. If not, we will just have to wait. I'll let everyone know as soon as I hear something.

Butch
