BIOGRAPHY: William Warner embraced the religious dogma of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in anticipation of enjoying religious freedom. He gathered his children around him sometime during the years 1630-1634, and made preparations to emigrate from England to New England. He became a member of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, a strict Puritan congregation, which demanded compliance with Colony covenants. He and his sons set sail on the Increase during eht second migration of the group. This sailing vessel was propelled by wind across the Atlantic Ocean by three or more massive fabric sails. The ship was approximately 100 feet long, 26 feet wide, and it weighed about 180 tons.. The ship was more suited for cargo than for passengers and its interior was modified for the journey. Converting a cargo ship to a passenger ship was no easy task! Living space could only be gained in the space between the stern and the forecastle
(between decks). Rough cabin cubicles were framed to house the women and children. Men slept wherever a hammock could be suspended in free space.
The lower decks carried the cargo and the cattle. The voyage was a major undertaking (lasting for two months), and sometimes the ship encountered violent, rough seas--which tossed the passengers and the cargo about the ship. Food and fresh water were carefully rationeed; some passengers became violently ill and suffered from motion sickness and scurvy. The smell of methane gas, emanating from the cattle quarters, must have bgeen overwhelming!
The Warner family is recorded as among the first arrivals at Agawan. Both the Warner and Wells families were called "people of consideration among the first settlers", - Warner Manor - Pages 11-13
