40. Holstein Monroe Warner Sr.

Farmer - Family records in poss. of Vera S. Madson An Archive FGR shows Ann Dewsnup married Holstein Monroe Warner, Dec 1865.

CONFLICT: Marriage 1 Jan 1866 is what I first had. History of Ann Dewsnup written by Ann Dewsnup's dauthter Phoebe Campbell Smoot tells that Ann and Holstein were married at Christmas 1865; Warner Manor also had December 1865.

CONFLICT: I had birth date as 16 Mar 1837 however the Diary of Holstein Monroe Warner Jr. shows the birth a 8th March 1837; Warner Manor, Page 178 shows birth as March 16, 1837.

BIOGRAPHY: Warner Manor; pages 178-179. Hostein Monroe Warner (Sometimes spelled Holstein)
Hostein Monroe Warner was born at Clay, Onondaga, New York on March 16, 1837. He was the first child born to the union of Orange Warner and Delilah Robison Warner. He accompanied his parents on the long journey by wagon from Clay, New York to Nauvoo, Illinois; from Nauvoo to Zarahemla (Montrose, Iowa); from Montrose to Fremont County---near the Missouri border; and from Council Bluffs to Salt Lake City in the Luman Shurtliff Company. Upon arrival in the Salt Lake Valley, the familywas sent to live in Sessions Fort for a very short time before Orange received aht call to help establish the City of Fillmore in Millard County. The Warners were among the first fifteen families who arrived at the site near Chalk Creek in October 1851
Hostein was fourteen years old upon his arrival in thee Pauvan Valley, which was locataed 150 miles from Salt Lake City. He was old enough to assume many duties normally assigned to a grown man. He assisted his father in the heavy workload required at the two sawmills: the first established for rough logging, and the second for sawing the logs into boards.
On July 21, 1853, Hostein and his older brother, Byron, were assigned to be guards for moving the settlers' cattle from Fillmore to Salt Lake City during the Walker War alert. It was a daring journey and took courage to travel the long distance under perilous circumstances. This assignment was necessary for the preservation of stock---that otherwise, would be stolen by the Indians. More guards were assigned the task for protecting the stock once the boys reached Salt Lake City.
Early in 1855, the church membership was called to participate in the United Order (which was piloted and implemented at Fillmore), and all properties were legally transferred to the church through the legal office of Hostein's uncle, Thomas Rice King, wh served as Probate Judge for Millard County. Shortly thereafter, Pauline Hutchend and Hostein were married on 15 February 1857 when Hostein was just twenty years old. He established a home in the old fort and his name is among the landowners of Millard cCounty in 1858.
Mortimer Wilson and Hostein Warner were called to positions of teamsters under the direction of Captain Samuel White during the periof of activity when the Perpetual Immigratrion Fund was established to assist converted emigrants from Europe in reaching Zion. THe boys made two trips to Florence, Nebraska with their teams. A second trip found the two young men working under the direction of the John R. Murdock Company in 1864. This was not a task for the faint of heart. The teamsters were harassed by United States Army troops who forced them, at point of bayonet, to swear allegiance to the United States. Troops tried to confiscate some former Army mules; those carring brand marked "U.S,", that had been legally purchased by the Mormons at Camp Floyd. The enterprising teamsters procured tar from the wheels of their wagons, and then painted the initials "U S" on their stock every time they saw a U. S. Army unit approaching. The soldiers ignored them because they thought the Mormons were just trying to get attention.
Romance blossomed among the teamsters and their Scottish passengers on the return trip from Florence. After returning to Fillmore, Hostein was married to Ann Dewsnip in December of 1865 and brother Mortimer married Christena Brown.
The Black Hawk War began in1865. It had been fueled through a misconception held by the Indians regarding a smallpox epidemic. They believed the Mormons had written their names and given them to Satan. They also had grievances against some incidents, both actual and perceived, which caused them to retaliate by employing guerrilla warfare tactics on the white settlements. The war was in full swing when Hostein Monroe Warner died on the 23rd of May 1866 at the age of twenty-nine years. His only known issue was a child named Hostein Monroe (Jr.) born to Ann Dewsnip Warner.
